چکیده

The present study investigates the optical characteristics and the spectral and angular responses of a Kretschmann surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor configuration that is widely used in biological and chemical sensing applications. In order to examine the influence of wave interference and optical properties of thin films on angular variation of reflectance at different incident angles, the Kretschmann SPR configurations made of gold films with 30, 52, and 70 nm thicknesses were fabricated and the reflectance was detected using a 633 nm He-Ne laser, -2 rotation stages, and a silicon pin photo-detector. In particular, this study involved the numerical analysis of angular and spectral variation of reflectance estimated using the characteristic transmission matrix (CTM) method. It was found that the SPR sensitivity became highly dependent on the gold film thickness, indicating that in the thinner gold film case, the reflectance was recovered slowly after the SPR angle, whereas as the gold film thickness increased, the magnitude difference between the maximum and the minimum reflectance measured near the SPR angle was smaller than in other cases. From the numerical analysis, it was shown that the phase shift is the most sensitive physical parameter for SPR sensor by comparing estimated FWHM values of reflectance, phase shift, and enhancement of magnetic field intensity. Therefore, it was concluded that an appropriate metal thickness of around 50 nm was found for higher sensitivity. [doi:10.2320/matertrans.M2010003]

Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensors for Disease Diagnosis

Most of the optical sensors based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) are imitated from two main configurations. Firstly, in the KretschmannRaether configuration, a thin metal layer is sandwiched between the prism and the air. Otherwise, the Otto configuration, there is a gap between the metal and the prism. However, the Kretschmann-Raether geometry is more conventional scheme to generate the su...

Effect of photodiode angular response on surface plasmon resonance measurements in the Kretschmann-Raether configuration.

We study the effect of photodiode angular response on the measurement of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in metallic thin films using the Kretschmann-Raether configuration. The photodiode signal depends not only on the light intensity but also on the incidence angle. This implies that the photodiode sensitivity changes along the SPR curve. Consequently, the measured SPR spectrum is distorted, t...

Angulo-spectral surface plasmon resonance imaging of nanofabricated grating surfaces.

We present a surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRI) setup, based on the Kretschmann configuration, capable of simultaneously acquiring the complete spectral and angular plasmonic reflectivity response on all points of the sensing area. Several line poly(methyl methacrylate) grating regions were fabricated on a thin-film gold surface and characterized with this SPRI system. Reflectivity maps o...

Narrow groove plasmonic nano-gratings for surface plasmon resonance sensing

We present a novel surface plasmon resonance (SPR) configuration based on narrow groove (sub-15 nm) plasmonic nano-gratings such that normally incident radiation can be coupled into surface plasmons without the use of prism-coupling based total internal reflection, as in the classical Kretschmann configuration. This eliminates the angular dependence requirements of SPR-based sensing and allows ...

Interference of conically scattered light in surface plasmon resonance.

Surface plasmon polaritons on thin metal films are a well studied phenomena when excited using prism coupled geometries such as the Kretschmann attenuated total reflection configuration. Here we describe a novel interference pattern in the conically scattered light emanating from such a configuration when illuminated by a focused beam. We observe conditions indicating only self-interference of ...
